The Importance of Mindset in CrossFit (and Life)
When it comes to CrossFit, your mindset is as important as your muscle. Let’s face it, most people aren’t born with the skill to nail those bloomin’ double unders first go. So, what keeps some of us counting up the singles and what pushes others to keep working at the DUs until they look easy?
At CrossFit Mt Eliza, we know that developing a strong mindset is crucial not only for training but for life in general. In this article we’ll explore why mindset matters, what you can do to cultivate it, and where to look for help.
Why Mindset Matters
The Oxford Dictionary describes ‘mindset’ as “the established set of attitudes held by someone”. But just because it’s established, it doesn’t mean it can’t be changed. Especially if it’s holding you back from achieving your goals. Here’s a closer look at what kind of mindset you could have and/or develop.
- Growth vs. Fixed Mindset
Psychologist Carol Dweck popularised the concept of growth and fixed mindsets over 30 years ago. In attempting to explain how people develop their attitudes, she found that people with a fixed mindset tend to believe their abilities are fixed. This often leads to fear of failure and avoidance of challenges.
In contrast, a person with a growth mindset will embrace effort and see failure as a learning opportunity. Which means they often thrive on challenges. CrossFit, with its constant variation and intensity, is a natural breeding ground for a growth mindset - if you embrace it.
- Mental Toughness in Action
Whether it’s attempting double unders for the 100th time or finishing the last gruelling round of Murph, CrossFit demands resilience. Athletes with a growth mindset view these moments as opportunities to build mental toughness. According to sports psychology, mental toughness isn’t just about enduring discomfort; it’s about maintaining focus, staying positive, and believing in your ability to succeed despite challenges.
- The Ripple Effect
The mental strategies you develop in the box don’t stay there. Confidence, problem-solving, and a willingness to push past your comfort zone extend to your work, relationships, and really, all aspects of your life. Tackling life’s challenges with the same grit you bring to your WOD can lead to personal growth that goes well beyond physical fitness.
How to Cultivate a Positive Mindset
- Reframe Failure as Feedback
Failure isn’t the opposite of success; it’s part of the growth. Can’t hit that lift? Good. Now you know what to work on. View every setback as an opportunity to refine your skills. Embracing an athlete mindset involves viewing failure as an opportunity for progress.
- Focus on What You Can Control
Yes, sometimes the wod is going to suck (for you at least) and sometimes you’ll be tired and sore and just not feeling it – and oftentimes that’s out of your control. But what you can control is your effort, attitude, and preparation. Focusing on the ‘controllables’ will help reduce anxiety and keep you ready to push forward.
- Practice Gratitude
Gratitude isn’t just a feel-good buzzword; it’s a powerful tool for shifting perspective. And like all skills, it’s one that needs to be developed. Struggling through a workout? Be thankful that you’re building a stronger body for the future and the support of the CrossFit Mt Eliza community. Sholders buggered? Take the opportunity to build strong glutes/legs and really focus on great form so that you’re making the most of everything you CAN do.
4. Set Process-Oriented Goals
We already discussed goal-setting in our blog post “SMART Goal Setting for CrossFit Athletes: A Proven Path to Success”. ‘Outcome’ goals like “I want to deadlift 150kg” are great, but they’re not always within immediate reach. Instead, focus on ‘process’ goals, the small, daily actions that’ll get you there. That can be as simple as showing up to the box 4 times a week and committing to improving your nutrition.
- Find Your Tribe
One of the greatest aspects of CrossFit is its community. It’s why we treasure the culture and community we’ve been lucky enough to build here at CrossFit Mt Eliza. Surrounding yourself with people who uplift and challenge you is a sure-fire way for helping you get through a hard wod, or shitty day/week/month/year!
Mindset Tips for Life Beyond CrossFit
- Embrace Uncertainty
Uncertainty is uncomfortable, but as corny as it sounds, it’s where the growth happens. Whether it’s a career change or your first box jump, uncertainty signals that you’re leaping into new territory – and releases dopamine in your brain for a feel-good boost!
- Use Visualisation
We’ve all heard how elite athletes use visualisation to create familiarity, build confidence and ultimately improve their performance. But there’s absolutely nothing from stopping each one of us to use this simple trick. It’s why we warm up the body and the mind to focus on the skills before we start the workout. And this translates to so many real-life circumstances – tricky conversation with a neighbour, presentation at work, you name it! Spending a few minutes visualising the scenario will help you move more smoothly through it.
- Celebrate Small Wins
Big milestones are exciting, but don’t overlook the small victories. Whether it’s shaving a minute off your time or mastering a new movement, or showing up when you said you would, acknowledging progress keeps you motivated.
Final Thoughts
Your body can only go as far as your mind allows. By developing a strong, positive mindset, you’ll unlock new levels of performance, resilience, and satisfaction. In CrossFit and in life! At CrossFit Mt Eliza, we’re not just about building stronger athletes; we’re building stronger people and a stronger community. So, let’s embrace the mental game together and see just how far it can take us.
