The Best CrossFit Resources: Books, Blogs & Podcasts

We’ve all heard the rumour that CrossFit is a cult. And although we can steadfastly say that ain’t true, we must admit that CrossFit is more than just a ‘normal’ gym. It really does become a lifestyle. And we’re pretty proud of that, because it’s a lifestyle that supports the wellbeing of all of our members here at CrossFit Mt Eliza.

And just like any lifestyle, we know that staying informed and inspired is key to long-term success. That’s why at CrossFit Mt Eliza, we believe in sharing knowledge to support our members’ growth, both inside and outside the box.

In this blog post we’ve compiled a list of some of the most valuable resources that have helped us stay on top of our game. From podcasts to blogs to must-read books. There’s a treasure trove of wisdom for all CrossFit athletes right here.

Podcasts to Keep You Motivated

Podcasts are perfect for squeezing in some extra learning while commuting or during your active recovery walk. Here are a few of our favourites:

  • Chasing Excellence: Created by Ben Bergeron, a renowned American CrossFit coach, this podcast delves into everything from mindset and training tips to leadership and personal growth. It’s a must-listen for anyone looking to become the best version of themselves, both in and outside the gym.
  • Huberman Lab Podcast: Hosted by Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist at Stanford, this podcast dives deep into science-backed methods for improving performance, recovery, and overall well-being. While not CrossFit-specific, the topics - like optimising sleep, managing stress, and improving focus - share great tips for athletes. We think it’s best to start with the early ones first.
  • Maintenance Phase: A refreshing and often hilarious take on tackling misinformation in the health and fitness industry. If you’ve ever wondered whether detox teas or fad diets are worth your time (spoiler: they’re not), this podcast is for you.

Blogs That Educate and Inspire

For those who prefer a good read over listening in, these blogs provide a mix of practical advice, deep dives into fitness science, and stories that resonate:

  • Breaking Muscle: A fantastic resource for all things strength and conditioning. Their training guides and expert advice are perfect for CrossFitters of all levels.
  • WODHopper Blog: A treasure trove of articles ranging from workout tips to community stories. Their post on the best CrossFit blogs is worth checking out – bet you’ll find a few more to add to your list.
  • Mark’s Daily Apple: Mark Sisson is a former long-distance runner, triathlete and Ironman competitor. His weekly e-newsletter updates cover everything from primal eating to movement patterns. His advice is rooted in science, making it a staple for many of us at CrossFit Mt Eliza.
  • HYROX Blog: If you’re prepping for a HYROX competition, their blog provides specific tips and training plans tailored to the event. Though we plan to post some tips to help you get ready for the Brisbane comp in March 2025 very soon!
  • CrossFit Journal: Although no longer updated, this archive is still a goldmine of articles covering training, nutrition, and the philosophy behind CrossFit.

Books Worth Borrowing

Sometimes, there’s nothing like flipping through a book to truly absorb its wisdom. At CrossFit Mt Eliza, we have a small lending library of must-reads. Here are two of our favourites:

  • Becoming a Supple Leopard by Dr. Kelly Starrett: The ultimate guide to mobility, injury prevention, and movement optimisation. If you’ve ever wondered why your squat feels off or how to fix nagging shoulder pain, this book is your answer. Talk to Alasdair if you’d like to borrow it.
  • Diastasis Recti by Katy Bowman: While this book is particularly helpful for anyone dealing with abdominal separation, its focus on core strength and functional movement makes it relevant to all athletes. A highly recommended read for anyone looking to improve their foundational strength.
  • Life in Two: Not what you expected to find in this list, I’m sure. This book written by a local, Greg Sugars OAM (and edited by the Mrs - Niamh Hislop) is a brilliant short read. Greg shares his experiences as a corporate warrior, family man, community worker and explores the choices that make us who we are.

YouTube Channels to Watch

When you need a visual, YouTube is the place to go. Here are a couple of standout channels:

  • CrossFit’s Official Channel: Packed with workout demos, athlete interviews, and tips for improving your technique, it’s an indispensable resource for CrossFitters.
  • Kelly Starrett’s Mobility WOD (now The Ready State): The video companion to Becoming a Supple Leopard, this channel offers quick, practical tips for mobility and recovery.

How to Use These Resources

Feeling overwhelmed by all this information? Don’t worry, you don’t have to get through them all in one go. Here’s how to make the most of these resources without burning out:

  1. Start small: Pick one podcast or blog to explore this week – or month if a week seems like too much pressure! Try listening to Chasing Excellence on your next walk or skim Mark’s Daily Apple with your morning coffee.
  2. Take notes: OK, we know it sounds nerdy, but jotting down any actionable tips or insights helps to keep you engaged. And you can review your notes later to keep you inspired and track your progress.
  3. Share the love: Found something useful? Share it with your fellow CrossFitters. We’re all in this together, and this community is what makes CrossFit Mt Eliza so special.
  4. Have a chat: If you’re unsure where to start or want recommendations tailored to your goals, ask a coach. We’re here to help.
